Street Renaming Ceremony Honoring Dr. Ahmad Jaber
- This event has passed.
Join the Arab American Association and local elected officials in the official street renaming of the intersection of 5th Avenue & Ovington Avenue as Dr. Ahmad Jaber Way.
Dr. Jaber founded the Arab American Association of NY (AAANY) and served as its president for many years. He was essential for helping newly-arrived Arab and Muslim immigrants settle in Bay Ridge and beyond, with many remembering Dr. Jaber as someone who helped pave the way on their journeys in New York. Through the Arab American Association, his work lives on, providing social services, immigration support, and public advocacy.
An immigrant himself, born in Palestine, Dr. Jaber arrived in New York in 1974, and practiced as an OB-HYN in Bay Ridge for many years. Not content merely to found AAANY, there was seemingly no kindness too small for Dr. Jaber to express: help with rent or a grocery bill, helping someone find a new apartment, the list goes on.
He was also an Imam at the State Street mosque in downtown Brooklyn, founding or helping to lead in his time numerous other organizations, including the NYC chapter of the National Arab-American Medical Association, the Al-Noor Islamic School, Beit Al-Maqdis Islamic Center, the Islamic Mission of America, and the Brooklyn Heights Interfaith Clergy Association.
After Dr. Jaber’s passing in 2020, it didn’t take long for the neighborhood to honor his contributions. By 2022, the bill renaming the intersection was passed in the City Council, close by his original 5th avenue practice. Now in 2024, we can officially unveil the new name: a small token of permanence in a neighborhood irrevocably changed by his kindness and philanthropy.
Join us as we celebrate Dr. Jaber’s memory on Saturday, July 27th at 10am at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Ovington.
